With so many options available, it can be difficult to know which form
of birth control is right for you. At Women’s Health at Valley View,
we work with women to help them understand what form of birth control

Treatment Options
Birth Control Pills
As an oral medication, birth control pills must be taken daily in order
to act as effective contraception. They are typically considered a short-term
option for protection against pregnancy and may also be helpful for treating
some symptoms of certain conditions, including endometriosis.
Intrauterine Device (IUD)
Approved by the FDA, an intrauterine device (IUD) is a form of contraception
that is placed into the uterus. Depending on the type of IUD used, it
may be hormone-releasing or free of hormones. An IUD does not need to
be taken daily, and it will be placed and removed by one of our board-certified OB/GYNs.
NuvaRing
NuvaRing is a flexible vaginal ring that is inserted monthly as a form
of contraception. Unlike an IUD, NuvaRing does not need to be inserted
by a physician, but it will require a prescription. The NuvaRing applicator
is similar to a tampon and is inserted by the patient in the comfort of
their own home.
Birth Control Implant
A birth control implant is embedded in the arm and can provide up to three
years of continuous pregnancy prevention. During a minimally invasive
procedure, one of our board-certified OB/GYN professionals will place
the implant in your arm. If you decide that you would like to get pregnant,
you will need to come back in and have the implant removed early.
Tubal Ligation
Tubal ligation, also referred to as “getting your tubes tied,”
works by tying, clamping, or sealing the fallopian tubes shut. It may
be performed laparoscopically for quicker recovery times and is highly
effective in preventing pregnancy. In some cases, the procedure may be
reversed if the patient decides they would like to try to conceive.
What to Expect
Even though you will have protection from getting pregnant, these contraception
options do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases or HIV. To
