Pelvic Floor Disorders
About Pelvic Floor Disorders
At Women’s Health at Valley View, we work to provide a proper diagnosis and effective treatment for pelvic floor disorders. This includes prolapse of the bladder, rectum, uterus, cervix, and vagina. A pelvic organ prolapse occurs when muscles and tissues are not able to fully support the pelvic organs. Our team of OB/GYN specialists provides both conservative and surgical methods to treat various pelvic floor disorders. We can also evaluate your symptoms to properly diagnose which type of disorder you may be suffering from. If you think you may be experiencing a pelvic floor disorder, contact one of our locations in Glenwood Springs, Basalt, or Silt, CO to learn more and to schedule your initial consultation.
Types of Disorders
Pelvic floor disorders are categorized, based on the affected pelvic organ. Different types of pelvic floor disorders include:
- Cystocele: This is also known as anterior prolapse and occurs when the bladder prolapses and drops into the vagina.
- Enterocele: A disorder that is present when the small intestine is pushed on the upper part of the vagina, making a bulge.
- Rectocele: Also known as a posterior vaginal prolapse, this occurs when the rectum creates bulging in the vagina.
- Uterine prolapse: This occurs when the uterus drops down toward the vagina and in some cases, protrudes from the vaginal opening.
- Vaginal vault prolapse: A condition that exists when the top part of the vagina drops and loses its support.
Treatment Options
After properly diagnosing a pelvic floor disorder, our OB/GYN specialists will create a customized treatment plan based on the extent of your condition and where it is occurring. Typically, noninvasive forms of treatment will be recommended first. This could include special strengthening exercises with a pelvic floor physical therapist or the placement of a pessary, which is a small device placed into the vaginal area to support the prolapsed pelvic organs. If your condition is more severe, or if less invasive treatments are not effective, surgery may be recommended to treat your pelvic floor disorder. The type of surgical procedure needed will vary, depending on your condition and which pelvic organs are affected. During a thorough consultation, our skilled team of OB/GYNs will explain the entire treatment process to you and to answer questions about your options.
