Pap Test – Cervical Cancer Screening
About Pap Tests
A Pap is typically part of a thorough woman’s health exam and is recommended for all women starting at age 21. A Pap is usually performed with a pelvic exam and is an important test to detect cervical cancer or any abnormal cells on the cervix that could become cancer in the future. Sometimes a Pap may be combined with a test for human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that is the cause of most cervical cancers. At Women’s Health at Valley View, our skilled team of OB/GYN specialists and Certified Nurse Midwives perform Pap tests when needed to ensure early detection and early treatment of any precancerous or cancerous cells on the cervix. To schedule your Pap smear, contact one of our locations in Glenwood Springs, Basalt, Eagle or Silt, CO.
Pap Techniques
Performed during a well-woman exam, a Pap is performed quickly. A speculum is used to hold the vaginal area open and a brush is used to acquire a sample from the cervix. This sample of cells is then sent to a lab for testing, and we will update you on your results. A negative or normal result means that the only healthy cells were found on your test. If you have a positive, or abnormal result, this doesn’t mean that you have cervical cancer, but it is important to follow-up. Depending on the result, you may be asked to come back into our facility for further testing and treatment. There are several diagnostic tools and treatment options for positive Pap tests available at our practice.
- Colposcopy: Used as a diagnostic tool, a colposcopy allows for a closer look of the cervix after abnormal Pap results. During the procedure, a speculum is inserted into the vagina and a magnifying instrument called a colposcope is used to look the cervix more closely. If your provider recommends additional sampling they will collect it during this exam.
- LEEP: Performed under local anesthetic, a loop electrical excision procedure (LEEP) is used to destroy abnormal cells using an electrical current. In the procedure, a small wire loop is used to collect the cells from the cervix. Following LEEP, some women may experience cramping and/or vaginal discharge. Our team can answer any questions you may have about the procedure and provide you with aftercare instructions.
- Cryotherapy: Cryotherapy is a procedure used to destroy abnormal tissue on the cervix by freezing it. Liquid carbon dioxide is administered through a probe in order to freeze the tissue. Some discomfort may be experienced and most women report feeling a cold sensation and some cramping followed by watery vaginal discharge.
What to Expect
After you have had an abnormal result from a Pap, it is recommended to undergo more frequent tests in the future. This allows our team to be more proactive in identifying any issues before they develop further. Prior to any treatment, we will talk with you so that you know what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
