Pap Smear

About Pap Smears

A Pap smear is typically part of a thorough woman’s health exam and is performed in order to test for any abnormal cells on the cervix. At Women’s Health at Valley View, our skilled team of OB/GYN specialists performs Pap smears in order to test for human papillomavirus (HPV), as well as precancerous and cancer cells. No matter their sexual history, at the age of 21 or sooner, a woman should have her first Pap smear test in order to diagnose any abnormalities. Through this simple, quick test, early detection is possible, allowing any necessary treatment to begin as soon as possible. If abnormalities are detected, our board-certified team will be able to explain your treatment options before creating a customized procedure plan. To schedule your Pap smear, contact one of our locations in Glenwood Springs, Basalt, or Silt, CO.

Treatment Techniques

Performed during a well-woman exam, a Pap smear is performed quickly. A speculum is used to hold the vaginal area open and a brush is used to acquire a sample from the cervix. This sample of cells is then sent to a lab for testing, and we will update you on your results. If you have abnormal results, you will be asked to come back into our facility for further testing and treatment. There are several diagnostic tools and treatment options available at our practice.

  • Colposcopy: Used as a diagnostic tool, a colposcopy allows for a closer look of the cervix after abnormal Pap smear results. During the procedure, a speculum is inserted into the vagina and images of the cervix are taken. It will then be decided if a biopsy needs to be taken.
  • Leep: Performed under local anesthetic, a loop electrical excision procedure (LEEP) is administered to destroy abnormal cells using an electrical current. In the procedure, a small wire loop is used to collect the cells from the cervix. Following LEEP, some women may experience cramping and/or vaginal discharge. Our team can answer any questions you may have about the procedure and provide you with aftercare instructions.
  • Cryotherapy: Cryotherapy is a procedure used to destroy abnormal tissue on the cervix by freezing it. Liquid carbon dioxide is administered through a probe in order to freeze the tissue. Some discomfort may be experienced and most women report feeling a cold sensation and some cramping.

What to Expect

After you have had an abnormal result from a Pap smear, it is recommended to undergo more frequent tests in the future. This allows our team to be more proactive in identifying any issues before they develop further. Prior to any treatment, we will talk with you so that you know what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

Take Preventive Measures

A Pap smear test is a crucial procedure to screen for cancer cells in order to be proactive in offering treatment to destroy abnormal cells before further issues develop. Our team of board-certified at Women’s Health at Valley View strongly recommends that women receive regular screenings as a preventive measure.
