Hysterectomy

About Hysterectomies

When there is a condition affecting the uterus and the symptoms are causing a decrease in your quality of life, it may time to consider a hysterectomy. At Women’s Health at Valley View, our team of skilled OB/GYNs may recommend a hysterectomy when other treatments may have not been effective. Through varying surgical techniques, a hysterectomy is a procedure that removes part or all of the uterus, which can eliminate subsequent conditions, such as fibroids, pelvic organ prolapse, or endometriosis. To learn more, we invite you to schedule a private consultation at one of our locations in Glenwood Springs, Basalt, or Silt, CO to learn more about a hysterectomy.

Treatment Options

At Women’s Health at Valley View, our team of board-certified OB/GYNs performs hysterectomies utilizing various surgical methods. Our surgeons prioritize use of minimally invasive surgical techniques whenever possible because they offer shorter recoveries, less scarring and less pain in most cases.

  • Laparoscopic Hysterectomy: Using a laparoscope, a tube-like device with a camera attached to it, a laparoscopic hysterectomy typically only involves three small incisions to the abdomen. The uterus is then typically removed through these small incision. With a laparoscopic hysterectomy, the recovery process is usually much faster than traditional methods.
  • Robotic Hysterectomy: A robotic-assisted hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed with the help of a robotic machine. This surgery includes small incisions in the abdomen through which robotic arms separate and remove the uterus from the surrounding structures. A robotic hysterectomy offers similar benefits to a laparoscopic hysterectomy and may be recommended for certain types of conditions.
  • Vaginal Hysterectomy: In a vaginal hysterectomy, the uterus is detached and removed through the vagina. One of the minimally invasive options for your hysterectomy, your surgeon may recommend this approach based your individual needs.
  • Open Hysterectomy: An abdominal or open hysterectomy includes the use of a single large incision made across the abdomen. Through this incision, the uterus is removed and the area is stitched closed.

What to Expect

Following a hysterectomy, you will not be able to get pregnant and will no longer experience a menstrual period. Depending on your existing conditions, the fallopian tubes or ovaries may also be removed during a hysterectomy. Despite your age, when the ovaries are removed, your body will enter menopause. Whatever the reason for your hysterectomy, our team of specialists will educate you on your procedure options and provide you with information on what you can expect before, during, and after a partial or full hysterectomy. We also understand that a surgical treatment option may not be right for every patient, which is why we typically recommend less invasive forms of treatment prior to a surgical procedure.
