STI Testing

About STI Testing

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are contracted by vaginal, anal, and oral sex. The organisms that cause these diseases are specifically transmitted from one person to the next through blood, semen, vaginal secretions, or other bodily fluids. In some cases, STIs can be passed from mother to baby during pregnancy or through the use of shared needles. At Women’s Health at Valley View, we screen for many different types of STIs at our clinic locations in Glenwood Springs, Basalt, Eagle, and Silt, CO. If you suspect you may have an STI or have never been checked, we invite you to make an appointment at one of our care centers today.

Common Types of STIs

There are many different types of STIs, but some of the most common include:

  • HPV
  • Genital Herpes
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • Hepatitis
  • HIV

Signs and Symptoms

The signs and symptoms will vary from person to person, depending on the type of STI, location, and severity. Some symptoms that are cause for concern may include:

  • Sores or bumps on the genitals
  • Unusual penial or vaginal discharge
  • Discomfort during intercourse
  • Painful or burning urination
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Fever

Prevention

There are several precautions you can take to help prevent STIs. Some good practices include abstaining from sexual activity until you and your partner have been tested, getting vaccinated for HPV, and using condoms or dental dams consistently. Limiting the number of sexual partners may also help decrease the chances of acquiring an unwanted infection or STI.

Tests and Treatments

The first step in the screening process would be to make an appointment at one of our healthcare centers. From there, several options are available, including a physical exam, blood tests, urine samples, and fluid assessments. All of these evaluations will help determine and confirm a diagnosis if you have an STI. This process is generally very quick, and appointments typically take about 15 minutes.
There are various treatment options available to help treat the signs and symptoms of STIs and even decrease the frequency of outbreaks. Generally, STIs that are caused by bacteria are very treatable, but with viral infections, it’s more about managing symptoms as there may not be a cure.
