Contraception Options

About Contraception

With so many options available, it can be difficult to know which form of birth control is right for you. At Women’s Health at Valley View, we work with women to help them understand what form of birth control may be best suited for them. Through comprehensive contraception counseling, our team of board-certified OB/GYNs and certified nurse midwives will evaluate your medical and family history, as well as your lifestyle to be able to better provide an option that meets your needs. We can also explain the pros and cons of each form of contraception and answer any questions that you may have. To learn more and to schedule your contraception counseling appointment, contact us in Glenwood Springs, Basalt, Eagle or Silt, CO.

Treatment Options

Birth Control Pills

As an oral medication, birth control pills must be taken daily in order to act as effective contraception. They are typically considered a short-term option for protection against pregnancy and may also be helpful for treating symptoms of certain conditions such as endometriosis and irregular periods.

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

Approved by the FDA, an intrauterine device (IUD) is a form of contraception that is placed into the uterus. Depending on the type of IUD used, it may be hormone-releasing or free of hormones. An IUD does not need to be taken daily, and it will be placed and removed by one of our board-certified OB/GYNs or certified nurse midwives. IUDs are long acting and may be effective for up to 10 years or more depending on the type of device selected. If you decide that you would like to get pregnant, you can have the IUD removed[CR1] [SD2] [SD3]. We offer multiple pain management options. Please ask your provider what options are best suited to your needs.

Vaginal Contraceptive Ring

A vaginal contraceptive ring, sometimes known as a NuvaRing, is a flexible vaginal ring that is inserted monthly as a form of contraception. Unlike an IUD, vaginal contraceptive rings do not need to be inserted by a physician, but it will require a prescription. The applicator is similar to a tampon and is inserted by the patient in the comfort of their own home.

Birth Control Implant

A birth control implant, called Nexplanon, is embedded in the arm and can provide up to three years of continuous pregnancy prevention. During a minimally invasive procedure, one of our OB/GYNs or certified nurse midwives will place the implant in your arm. Placed under the skin, the implant is nearly undetectable. If you decide that you would like to get pregnant, you can have the implant removed.

Female Sterilization

Female sterilization is a permanent procedure to prevent pregnancy. It works by preventing the egg and sperm from meeting. Commonly referred to as a tubal, a bilateral salpingectomy is the complete removal of both fallopian tubes. This procedure is performed through very small incisions in the abdomen. It is highly effective and cannot be reversed.

What to Expect

Even though you will have protection from getting pregnant, these contraception options do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases or HIV. To learn about all of your birth control options or if you have any questions or concerns, we invite you to contact our practice for a contraception counseling appointment.
