What Is Sports Medicine?

Sports medicine is an orthopedic subspecialty that focuses on diagnosing and treating a wide range of activity-limiting conditions that may be caused by injury, disease or the normal process of aging. These conditions primarily, but not exclusively, affect the knee, shoulder, hip, ankle and elbow. This specialty serves anyone with a musculoskeletal injury or pain who would like to be more active than their medical condition allows.

Our approach to sports medicine involves treating the entire patient, rather than simply a set of symptoms. Before turning to a surgical intervention, we explore all nonsurgical options, which may include bracing, medication, casting, injections (including Platelet-Rich Plasma or PRP) physical therapy, or a unique method of therapy offered at ValleyOrtho called Active Release Technique (ART).

ValleyOrtho’s innovative approach also enables our physicians to focus on how athletes can prevent injury and improve their performance without placing themselves at risk for injuries or other problems. Our injury prevention programs have been implemented through our highly trained Athletic Trainers, in local high schools and clubs throughout the Roaring Fork Valley.

ValleyOrtho’s Athletic Trainers provide a wide range of services, from direct patient care and physician support in the clinic, to athlete support on the field. This unique structure provides a high level of continuity of care to our athlete’s, allowing for efficient treatment and safe return to play.
