About Philip

Philip Wheeler, MD, is an emergency room physician in the Valley View ER. He earned a doctor of medicine degree from Wake Forest School of Medicine and completed his emergency medicine residency at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

Dr. Wheeler has conducted research in the areas of shoulder reductions in the field and the prognostic effects of genetic markers in melanoma. He has presented his work at several conferences on topics that include Serotonin Syndrome, Cardiogenic Shock in Advanced Heart Failure and Bedside Ultrasound Diagnosis of Aortic Dissection.

When working with patients, Dr. Wheeler prioritizes a collaborative approach with patients. “In the ER, we get the privilege of meeting a patient who is worried about an immediate problem, and usually get to leave that encounter with either a solution or reassurance that the patient is safe. It is rewarding to be able to lay a patient’s concerns to rest,” he says.

Originally from Maryland, Phil is new to Western Colorado but not new to the mountain lifestyle. A former professional downhill mountain bike racer, Phil also enjoys motocross racing, rock climbing, archery, wood and metalworking. Phil also makes custom high-end custom cutlery.
