Survivor Event Recap

On a perfect Colorado summer evening in June, approximately 100 people gathered in Glenwood Spring’s Sayre Park for a celebration recognizing cancer survivors past and present.

Survivors and their family and friends snacked on sandwiches provided by Jimmy John’s and fresh donuts from Aspen Mini Donuts, while musician Shaefer Welch played guitar and Lenny the Leonberger, a registered therapy dog, was there to share comfort.

Comments and tributes were offered by Calaway-Young Cancer Center Director Hans Lindbloom as well as Dr. Alexandra Donovan, Diane Heald, RN, and patients Chip Wells and her husband, Mike, who shared their cancer journey stories. A moment of silence was held in honor of the cancer warriors our community has lost.

An individual is considered a survivor from the time of their first diagnosis through the rest of their life. All cancer survivors, regardless of their stage of treatment, as well as those who support them and the community at large, were invited to attend. Surviving cancer is a lifelong commitment.
