Rocky Mountain Urology Center Announces Leading-Edge Aquablation Therapy for BPH

Rocky Mountain Urology Center now offers Aquablation Therapy, a minimally-invasive treatment for BPH in men. One of the few hospitals in Colorado to offer this technology and the first on the western slope, Urologists Jamie Lowe, MD and Aashish Kabra, MD are on the leading-edge of urology care.
BPH, or an enlarged prostate, is a non-cancerous condition where the prostate has grown to be larger than normal. One in two men ages 51 to 60 have BPH, and the incidence increases every decade of life. If left untreated, BPH can cause significant health problems, including irreversible bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones and incontinence. The problem with BPH surgical treatments today is that they often force men to tradeoff between symptom relief and side effects, limiting patients to choose between either a high degree of symptom relief with high rates of irreversible complications (such as incontinence, erectile dysfunction, or ejaculatory dysfunction) or low degree of symptom relief with low rates of irreversible complications.

Aquablation therapy is a different type of treatment for BPH. It’s an advanced, minimally invasive treatment that uses the power of water delivered with robotic precision to provide best-in-class and long-lasting symptom relief with low rates of irreversible complications, regardless of prostate size or shape.

“We are proud to be among the first in the state of Colorado to offer a solution for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) that provides BPH relief without compromise,” said Aashish Kabra, MD, general urologist at Rocky Mountain Urology Center at Valley View. “Both Jamie Lowe, MD and I specialize in BPH and bring great expertise to the procedure. Aquablation therapy allows us to take a less invasive approach and ensures more precision. Adding this cutting-edge service to our Urology Center will help improve our patients’ quality of life and further our commitment to men’s health.”

Aquablation therapy is performed by the AquaBeam Robotic System, the first FDA-cleared, surgical robot utilizing automated tissue resection or the treatment of LUTS due to BPH. It combines real-time, multi-dimensional imaging, automated robotic technology, and heat-free waterjet ablation technology for targeted, controlled, and immediate removal of prostate tissue. Aquablation therapy offers predictable and reproducible outcomes, independent of prostate anatomy, prostate size or surgeon experience. Aquablation therapy has proven results. In clinical studies, Aquablation therapy has been shown to provide both best-in-class and durable symptom relief with low rates of irreversible complications. A study within the Journal of Sexual Medicine, which surveyed 300 men living with BPH, revealed that 92% of respondents expressed interest in learning more about Aquablation therapy. This data demonstrates the need within the patient population to find relief without the trade-off between symptoms and relief side effects.

Rocky Mountain Urology Center’s physicians are experts in general urology and have subspecialty experience in urologic cancers, female urology and kidney stone disease. As the only full-time urology practice, Rocky Mountain Urology Center is the most comprehensive urology group in the region, from Roaring Fork Valley and Vail to De Bequeu. With two board-certified urologists, Aashish Kabra, MD and Jamie Lowe, MD, and a nurse practitioner, Ashley Gilley, ANP, the Center provides the most regional coverage with locations in Aspen, Eagle, Rifle, and Glenwood Springs, reducing travel and wait times. Additionally, a third board-certified urologist will join the team in early 2023, Scott Castle, MD, expanding care and coverage to the community.
