X-Ray (Radiography)

What Is an X-Ray?

X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation that is used to capture images of the bones, lungs, heart, chest wall, and GI tract. Our skilled radiologists of Imaging at Valley View in Glenwood Springs, Colorado serves patients of all ages and offers convenient hours for individuals in need of radiology care. X-Rays for Children

When performing X-rays on children, we take extra precaution and care to ensure your child is as comfortable and relaxed as possible. We will move patiently and walk your son or daughter through each step with clear direction and compassion. Many of the kids that visit our facility are usually so proud that they got an X-ray and are excited to tell their friends all about it. The team uses ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) when considering the amount of radiation to use, while not compromising the diagnostic quality of the image.

Why Is It Used?

X-rays are frequently used to assess injuries or trauma to the bones but can also be used to detect foreign objects in the body and diagnose pneumonia. X-rays are a valuable tool in assessing cancer, abdominal pain, blocked arteries, and other abnormalities. Essentially, a doctor will order X-rays to diagnose and evaluate a wide range of illnesses or wounds.

Procedure Details?

Patients will be welcomed into a private changing room so they can remove any articles of clothing or jewelry (if necessary) to change into a hospital gown for their assessment. The location of the target area will determine the position of the patient and the machine. For example, if the ribs are being X-rayed, a patient will lie down on a treatment table as the X-ray machine is properly centered by the technologist to capture images. In some cases, a contrast is used to help improve the visibility of certain organs or tissues. As the electromagnetic film passes through the body, the images are generated onto film, which results in a black, white, and gray picture.

Benefits and Risks?

The amount of radiation that your body is exposed to during an X-ray exam is very minimal and should not be of any cause for concern. If you are pregnant, please let your primary care provider and our team know so we can take extra precaution during your exam. Digital X-rays offer immediate results, which are crucial in the diagnostic process.
