MRI and MR

What Is an MRI/MR?

An MRI (or MR) is a specialized diagnostic test that utilizes advanced digital systems to take pictures of internal organs and structures of the body. This scan uses strong magnetic fields to create cross-sectional images of specific areas on the body, like the head, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. An MRI is unique because unlike a traditional X-ray, it is able to capture images of the soft tissues (tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bone marrow). Call Imaging at Valley View in Glenwood Springs, Colorado to schedule your MRI and to learn more from our elite team.

Why Is It Used?

An MRI is used to help capture images of the soft tissues so your doctor can fully visualize specific areas of concern to determine what is going on and how you can move toward treatment. MRIs are especially ideal for diagnosing problems in the brain or spinal cord, diseases in the eyes or ears, injuries of the shoulders, neck, or back, and issues with your joints or tendons. This scan can also capture the size and location of tumors.

How Do I Prepare?

You will need to change into hospital scrubs or gowns. If possible, leave jewelry, watches and metal hairpins at home. Instructions on drinking and eating will be provided by Valley View Imaging prior to your test so you know what to expect. If you have any metal implanted devices, such as a pacemaker or defibulator, appropriate research on MR compatibility will occur prior to scheduling your appointment. In some cases, these implants will not be compatible with an MR.

Procedure Details?

Our technologists will have you lie down comfortably on a cushioned bed and may inject a contrast medium, like gadolinium, to highlight certain soft tissues of the focused area. This process helps differentiate between healthy and unhealthy tissue. The bed will then be slowly guided into a tubular machine. Our registered technologists will be in constant contact with you throughout your exam to guide you through what you should expect. If you get anxious in small spaces speak with your primary care provider about medications before the scan. You will be given hearing protection and may be able to listen to music during your study.

Benefits and Risks?

An MRI does not expose you to any radiation, which makes it one of the safest scans we perform. On rare occasions, it’s possible to have a mild allergic reaction to the contrast solution that is administered for your exam. Symptoms may include itching, hives, or in extremely rare cases, anaphylaxis. An MRI is a state-of-the-art diagnostic tool that can catch various health concerns and diseases in the soft tissues that can’t be seen on a typical X-ray.
