Urinary Cancer

About Urinary Cancer

At Calaway•Young Cancer Center, we treat a wide variety of cancers, including urinary cancer. This type of cancer affects the urinary tract system, which involves the bladder and kidneys. These organs are responsible for creating and storing urine, which is disposed of by the urethra (another part of the UT system). Urinary cancer affects both men and women and is considered one of the most common cancers in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, men are at higher risk for bladder and kidney cancer than women. Regardless of the case, our gifted cancer team is here to provide you with the utmost medical care at our state-of-the-art facility in Glenwood Springs, CO.

Types of Urinary Cancer

There are two main types of urinary tract cancers:

  • Bladder
  • Kidney

There are also many subtypes of bladder and kidney cancers, and our team is highly trained and experienced in treating these diseases through a multidisciplinary approach.

Causes

Doctors are unsure of the exact cause of urinary cancer, but we do know it starts with a mutation of cells within the urinary tract system. When these cells divide and grow, it can develop into a malignant tumor. According to the American Cancer Society, about nine out of ten people are likely to be affected by bladder cancer over the age of 55. Advanced age is a contributing risk factor along with gender, race, infection, and one’s overall health.

Symptoms

The most common signs and symptoms of urinary cancer include:

  • Blood in urine
  • Frequent urination
  • Pain when urinating
  • Lower back pain (not caused by injury)
  • Pelvic pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue

Our cancer center offers a variety of different treatment options for men and women with urinary cancer. Common treatments include surgery, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and radiation.
