Male Cancer

About Male Cancer

Our team of board-certified oncologists at Calaway•Young Cancer Center is highly trained and experienced in treating male-specific cancers, such as testicular and prostate cancer. Testicular cancer occurs within the testicles or testes, which is responsible for producing hormones and sperm. Prostate cancer occurs in the prostate, which is a small gland that produces seminal fluid to help transport sperm. Although rare, prostate cancer is one of the most common malignancies to affect male patients 65 years of age and older. If you have been recently diagnosed with cancer, we invite you to call Calaway•Young Cancer Center in Glenwood Springs, CO to learn about your treatment options from our specialists.

Causes

The cause of prostate and testicular cancer is unclear, but we do know it begins when a group of cells in these areas develop a mutation within their DNA. When these cells divide and grow, it can result in a cluster of abnormal cells (tumor) and can even spread to other areas of the body. Some risk factors for male cancer include abnormal testicle development (Klinefelter syndrome), age, race, and having a family history of cancer.

Symptoms

Common signs and symptoms of male cancer may include:

  • A lump or enlargement of the testes
  • Abdominal or groin pain
  • Pain or discomfort in a testicle or the scrotum
  • Unexplained back pain
  • Blood in semen
  • Trouble urinating
  • Erectile dysfunction

Treatment Options

Our cancer center offers multiple treatment options for testicular and prostate cancer, including medical and radiation cancer, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. The treatment option selected will be determined by the stage, size, and location of cancer.
